Wreaths Across America Day

by Jenny King

The local chapter of Wreaths Across America is holding a pair of fund-raisers – Highlands Rotary Bingo on October 3, and Dinner and a Movie at Highlands United Methodist Church, November 10.

Whether they stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought in the jungles of Vietnam, or battled in the sands of Iraq or the mountains of Afghanistan, our brave men and women in uniform have always put our country first. Saturday, December 14, is National Wreaths Across America Day, with this year’s theme being “Everyone Plays a Part.” This is a wreath-laying ceremony at more than 1,600 locations across the United States, at sea, and abroad to honor those who served. This is the third year Highlands will be participating.

Phil Potts, organizer of the local Wreaths Across America ceremony, encourages anyone with a loved one who was a veteran, and is interred at Highlands Memorial Park, to get involved in this nationwide memorial on December 14.

He says, “We will be honoring veterans buried in Buck Creek, Clear Creek, Goldmine, Highlands, Horse Cove, Miller, Satolah, and Scaly Mountain cemeteries.”

This year, funds raised beyond their 550-wreath goal are going to the Advance Highlands Education Committee.

The ceremony begins at noon and shuttles will be running from the Highlands Community Building to the cemetery at regular intervals. There are many ways to participate, even if you’re not able to be in attendance.

On Thursday, October 3, the Rotary Club of Highlands and Wreaths Across America in Highlands are hosting a Bingo night at the Highlands Community Building. The games will help defray the costs associated with hosting the December 14 event. Table sponsorships are also available.

Then on Sunday, November 10, the Highlands United Methodist Church is hosting Dinner and a Movie. Dinner begins at 6:00 P.M., with everyone invited. It’ll include Chili, Baked Potato with Fixings, Salad, Drinks, Movie Popcorn, Chips, and Candy.

The movie, which will start around 6:30, will be “Apollo 13,” starring Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, and Kevin Bacon.

Dinner and a Movie admission is for a donation of your choosing. for a donation of your choosing which will support Wreaths Across America, Highlands.
