Showcasing Artistic Talent

by Mary Jane McCall

Long a cherished fixture on The Plateau Leaf Season Calendar, the Highlands Arts and Crafts Show will be staged at the Highlands Civic Center from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Saturday, October 12.

The Town of Highlands celebrates its annual Highlands Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, October 12, from 9:00 A. M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Highlands Civic Center at 600 North Fourth Street. Admission and parking to this event are free.

It is often surprising to think of how many talented craftsmen live in our midst and years ago the Highlands Women’s Club realized that local artisans needed a venue to showcase their talents. Thus began this increasingly popular craft fair, which continues to draw not only local artisans and visitors, but also those from throughout the region. The Highlands Arts and Crafts Show marks the true beginning of the autumn season for many who look forward to browsing the handiwork of more than 60 craftsmen, and taking home their one of a kind treasures.

Participating craftsmen continue to make this show a regular because it is such a well-organized event, and the venue and available parking ensure smooth sailing for vendors and shoppers alike.

There is always a wide selection of arts and crafts of every imaginable kind – woodworking; fine handcrafted furniture; Christmas wreaths, ornaments and gifts; woven items; items in stone and clay; paintings; drawings; handcrafted knives; jewelry; candles; scarves and other textiles; hand blown glass; woodworking; pottery; and, so much more. Gardeners also share their home grown flowers and botanicals. The Japanese Lanterns, dried Hydrangeas and other dried flowers and herbs sold here often find their way into many of the season’s finest wreaths, bouquets and arrangements.

Another highlight is always the wide array of home-baked cakes, pies, cookies, fudge, and breads, as well as jams, jellies, preserves, pickles, sauces and other home-canned goods available. Bring your appetites and pretend that calories don’t count when enjoying all these homemade goodies.

Mark your calendars now to spend the morning or afternoon here. For more information, please call the Town of Highlands at (828) 526-2118.
