Marian Baker, Folk Artist
The Laurel Magazine
Have you ever thought about the meaning of the word “giddy?”
One generally thinks, “Lighthearted thoughts, those full of excitement and happiness.”
Well…this describes Marian Baker to a tee!
Her personality exudes giddiness as does her work, and it is a descriptive term she uses often.
Who is Marian Baker? Marian is a contemporary folk artist from Alabama. She has been creating her whimsical pieces for about 10 years, and over this short time span, she has gained quite the following of admirers and collectors. It’s not just the charm of the art pieces, but also the stories behind the art. She inherited this masterful skill of storytelling from her grandmother.
Just to share a couple of tidbits…“Dippity-Dew Girls” is a reflection of life with her sister. On Saturday nights, they would prepare their hair for the Sunday morning church services. This meant taking their straight hair and forming a pin curl on the ends, securing it in place with two hair pins and a dab of Dippity-Do. To hold the pin curls in place, they would sleep with underwear on their heads!
Did it work? Absolutely not, hardly ever, but they would try again the following week, hoping for a miracle.
Another painting is inspired by the experience she and her brother had of always participating in the act of driving this very same sister nuts. Under the table, they would drop the flip-flops and play footsie with the sister, sending her screaming from the room.
These are only a couple of childhood memories that inspire her whimsy. Aside from the giddiness of the painting, look for a few features on Marian’s work…her initials are boxed in at the bottom in a house-like sketch, with the full signature on the back of the painting. Also of interest is the use of numbers; she selects significant numbers and uses mixed-media in the form of bingo squares and flashcards for representation.
