Art League’s Thanks to The Bascom

By Zach Claxton

Built upon a spirit of generosity and a unique vision, the partnership between The Art League of Highlands-Cashiers and The Bascom has led to a flourishing of the arts upon the Plateau.

The Bascom Center for the Visual Arts has had a major impact on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau’s art community.

The Art League of Highlands-Cashiers is especially grateful for the partnership that has developed between our two organizations. The Bascom has been supporting the Art League in many ways over the years.

To be sure, it’s provided a venue for the league’s monthly meetings and programs, which are beneficial to both organizations. The support of these activities goes beyond making its wonderful space available, but additionally provides staff to help set up and take down the meeting furnishings and making available audio and visual aids as needed. Bascom staff and interns often provide one of the seasonal speakers each year. It also promotes the league’s presentations, which are open to the public, through its newsletter.

For several years the Bascom also took a leading role in the league’s Summer Children’s Art Camp, a joint venture with the Recreation Park that provides a free introduction for area youth to the visual arts. It currently provides the use of its kiln for the camp’s ceramic projects and provides clay for those at its cost.

The Bascom also provides an outlet, through its partnership with Sotheby’s, for Art League members to have monthly displays of their work, giving members an opportunity to receive recognition in the community for their creations and talent.

The relationship between the Bascom and Art League is a symbiotic one. Most League members and many Bascom members belong to both organizations and support both financially and with volunteer work. Art League members and prospective members are encouraged to join the Bascom family.

The Art League owes the Bascom a big “Thank You” for all that it does to support the League and the many other organizations on the Plateau whose aim is to promote the visual arts.
