By Zach Claxton
The Art League of Highlands-Cashiers will host its September meeting at The Bascom on Monday, September 30. A wine reception begins at 4:30 P.M., followed by a presentation at 5:00. The Art League is pleased to have as its guest speaker Emily Wernig, The Bascom’s 2019 Ceramic Artist in Residence, working at The Bascom’s Dave Drake Studio Barn under the direction of Frank Vickery. There she teaches children’s art classes as well as holding private adult sessions.
A native of Gilford, New Hampshire, Ms. Wernig received her BFA from the University of New Hampshire in 2018 with a double major in drawing and ceramics. She graduated Summa Cum Laude as a University Presidential Scholar.
Her love for clay began in high school and intensified while in college. In 2016 she was inducted as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society, Alpha Chi Sigma. She was granted the Edwin and Mary Scheier Art Award as well as the Elizabeth Jones Art Scholarship for her ceramics work in 2016 and 2017. Her most recent exhibitions were in 2018 at the Portsmouth Music and Art Center in February, a show at Sotheby’s, Highlands in April and her BFA Thesis Show at the Museum of Art at UNH in May. For the last two summers, she was the Craftshop Supervisor at Sandy Island summer camp, instructing both children and adults in ceramics and other crafts.
Ms. Wernig’s presentation will include a demonstration that will enlighten attendees on the ceramics process. She will also have on display some of her work. This interesting and informative presentation is not to be missed. The reception and presentation are free and the public is invited.
