Another Successful Art League Year

By Zach Claxton

The Highlands-Cashiers Art League is winding up a busy, richly-rewarding season, culminating with the Fall Colors Fine Art Show at the Highlands Civic Center, October 19-20, and a member’s Show and Tell Presentation at The Bascom, October 28.

It hardly seems possible that the Art League’s season is drawing to a close. It has been a rewarding year with five quality presentations, another successful children’s art camp at the Rec Park and the Summer Colors Fine Art Show in Sapphire.

Membership increased again in 2019, and The Bascom, as always, went out of its way to make our board meetings and presentations effortless. It seems like only yesterday that in April Jon Houglum entertained the audience with his painting demonstration, followed in May by Diane Rush who talked about her paintings of historic Clayton. In June, Neal Hearn mesmerized attendees describing the process of creating his beautiful glass boxes. In July, Alabama artist Taylor White gave an account of her artistic journey, leading to the creation of her unbelievably realistic paintings. In August, abstractionist Leslie Jeffery displayed some of her recent work and created a new piece during her presentation.

The last formal presentation was given by Emily Wernig, The Bascom’s 2019 Ceramic Artist in Residence, who gave an educational demonstration of her art form. Special thanks is due board member Patty Calderone for arranging these remarkable presentations.

Only two events remain on this year’s agenda. The first is the Fall Colors Fine Art Show, to be held in the Highlands Civic Center October 19-20. Show hours are 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. both days. This is a members’ show where very talented local and regional artists will have on display and for sale original art. Paintings in all media, including drawing, photographs, glass, ceramics and wood will be represented. The show draws visitors from surrounding states and always receives positive comments about its quality. This indoor event offers free admission and parking.

The final public event will be held at The Bascom on Monday, October 28. Art League members will have their second annual Show and Tell Presentation. Willing members will present a piece of their work and talk about its creation. Attendees will be treated to free pizza, beer and wine at 4:30 P.M. prior to the presentation. The public is encouraged to attend this fun event.
